Description
This tapestry, inspired by the San Damiano Crucifix is the crucifix before which St. Francis prayed in 1205 having the “Calling.” The Crucifix transferred by the Poor Clares to the protomonastery of St. Clare in Assisi when they moved from the church of San Damiano in 1257. Tapestries became symbols of power and wealth: kings, nobles and church heads commissioned the most famous painters to draw preparatory cartoons, as a celebration
of their feats and tournaments or as reproductions of sacred scenes.Italian manufacture.
